Myths vs. Facts

Myth: One can’t rely on CalPERS actuarial reports.
March 15, 2010
Fact:

CalPERS employers give high ratings to CalPERS actuaries. Employer surveys conducted for CalPERS by outside polling agencies rate the value of the information, advice, and accuracy of information from CalPERS actuaries at 9 on a scale of 10. They rate them equally high in providing timely information. When asked to rate the trustworthiness of the CalPERS Actuarial Office, they gave an average rating of 9 on a scale from 1- 10. CalPERS actuaries are annually audited by an outside actuarial firm that CalPERS selects through request-for–proposals process. Actuaries at CalPERS must undergo a rigorous exam process, and must do their work in conformance with the Actuarial Standards Board, the American Academy of Actuaries Standards, and meet enrolled actuary requirements.
